 Peihua Gu is currently Provost and Professor in the Department of Mechatronic Engineering, Shantou University, China. From October 2005 to August 2010, he was seconded to Shantou Universityinitially as Vice President and Dean of Engineering, then as Provost, Shantou University. Priori to joining Shantou University, Dr. Gu was Head of the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (1999-2005) and holder of NSERC Chair in Life Cycle Design Engineering (2000-2006), and Associate Dean (Research), Faculty of Engineering (1997-1999). Dr. Gu was Chang Jiang Scholar of Ministry of Education from 2004-2007. He was twice awarded Industrial Research and Design Chairs by the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) in 1995 and 2000 respectively. He is an elected Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering (June 2004) and elected Fellow of International Academy of Production Engineering-CIRP (August 2004).

 Dr. Gu has been active in engineering education in Canada and China. In Canada from 1999-2005, Dr. Gu was one of the four founders and Vice Chairman in creating and developing Canadian Design Engineering Network (CDEN) with participation of all the engineering schools in Canada. CDEN, supported by NSERC, aimed to enhancing Canadian engineering education through engineering design and innovation. CDEN Annual Conference was devoted to engineering education in Canada. As Head of Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing, the University of Calgary, Dr. Gu led the Manufacturing Engineering program to win an international educational award of the 2003 Society of Manufacturing Engineers University LEAD Award. 

 In China, Dr. Gu introduced international CDIO (Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate) engineering education initiative to Shantou University in 2005, and led the development of Design Directed EIP-CDIO for all the programs in the College of Engineering, Shantou University. Currently, he is Chairman of Pilot Implementation of CDIO in Chinese Universities, supported by Ministry of Education in Chinaand Chairman of CDIO Research and Application Committee of Ministry of Education. Over 600faculty members and all levels of university leadership from over 160universities visited CDIO implementation in Shantou University or attended CDIO training workshops in the last 6years. Many universities have adopted CDIO approaches in engineering education in China.

 His main research contributions in design and manufacturing research include establishment of Adaptable Design Theory and Method (awarded Joseph Whitworth Prize by Institution of Mechanical Engineers, UK for his paper on Adaptable Design); development of some unique technologies in surface modelling and inspection; and original research in fabrication of products with locally controlled properties and multi-materials and multi-process deposition method (US Patent in 2009). He is an author and co-author of over 200 technical publicationsand delivered a number of keynote and plenary lectures.

 Dr. Guis Chairman of Engineering Accreditation Decision Committee of China Engineering Education Accreditation Association, China. He wasPast Chairman of Scientific and Technical Committee of Design, CIRP. He is Vice Chair of Mechanical EngineeringEducational Supervisory Committee of Ministry of Education from 2006-present, a member of Grant Panel of National Natural Science Foundation of China, a member of 4th and 5th Degree Confirmation Council of Guangdong Province, Chair of CDIO Pilot Program Group and Research and Implementation Committee of Ministry of Education of China. He also served as Chair and member of NSERC Grant Selection Committee for Industrial Engineering and many professional organizations. He is an Associate Editor and Member of Editorial Boards for over 10 Technical Journals. He served as Chair, Vice Chair and Member of Committees for a number of international conferences. Dr. Gu received his PhD from McMaster University, and M.Sc. and B.Eng (Dip) from Tianjin University.January 2014
