Tertiary education remains to be the key to the initial professional competence of engineers. But what is the inception stage of tertiary education? Is it academic or perhaps is vocational instead? Could academic training be deferred to advanced studies later in the professional career, such as CAS / MAS courses?
The European Federation of National Engineering Associations (FEANI), which covers the greater European Education Area (EHEA), discusses concepts of individual life-long learning and competence assessments in various European countries. In its ongoing EUR ING 2.0 project, FEANI seeks to ease the access for Professional Bachelors with a background of a non-academic Technician or Technologist diploma to the prestigious EUR ING certification. The former rigid stipulation of 15 years professional experience is to be superseded by 10 years or less — depending on the level of engineering competence that is already acquired – in connection to CPD, possibly including advanced studies on academic level at a higher age.
