Revisiting Global University Rankings

Interest in and popularity of global university rankings has been on the rise worldwide. They have been utilized by the several stakeholders for different types of decision making. There is also general recognition that no ranking system is perfect and there are specific criticisms of each ranking bodies. One of the most controvesial parameters is Perception which THE and QS claim to be the centrepiece of their systems and allot about half of the overall score to it. This aspect is examined here with respect to THE and QS global ranking bodies and the national NIRF rankings, by comparing the socres with and without inclusion of the perception scores. It is argued that Perception is entirely subjective and comes in the way of providing a level playing field for all institutions.
