Irene Stuart Torrie De Carvalho, was born in 1973 in Mozambique. She is PhD in food Engineering. She enjoys reading, listening to music and making crafts in her spare time.
Irene de Carvalho has been a researcher and dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) in Maputo, Mozambique, since 2019. Prior to this, from 2015 to 2019, she was the deputy dean for research and extension at UEM.
She has a PhD in food engineering from Lund University in Sweden, a master’s degree in food technology and quality from Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Portugal and a chemical engineering degree from UEM. She has taught since 2011 at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the fields of food technology, food analysis, human nutrition, chemical installation project management and scientific research methodology.
Irene has authored and co-authored publications in scientific journals and is also a reviewer. She conducts research related to human nutrition and has supervised several dissertations. She has been a team member of one of the subprogrammes of the UEM-Sweden Bilateral Cooperation Programme since 2017 (until 2022). Since 2018, she has led the new strategic plan to promote the increase of women in engineering courses. She is also a member of the Order of Engineers of Mozambique.
